How the trip cost is calculated
The reason most online budget estimates are wrong is simple: they multiply everything by the number of people. Real travel costs are charged in different units, and we respect each one.
- Travel — flight, train and bus fares are per traveller; a self-driven car is priced on distance, mileage and fuel rate plus tolls and parking, not per head.
- Stay — rooms are counted per room, with two adults per room, multiplied by nights and the nightly rate for your chosen tier.
- Food — a daily rate per traveller across all days, reduced by about 20% when your stay includes breakfast.
- Local transport — a daily cab or scooter rate charged per vehicle, not per person.
- Sightseeing — gondola and entry tickets are per person, while shikara rides and excursion cabs are per group.
- Emergency reserve — an optional 5% or 10% cushion on the subtotal for price changes and surprises.

It depends far more on distance and hotel tier than on the destination name. A 2-night Coorg or Chikkamagaluru weekend from Bangalore usually lands between ₹20,000 and ₹35,000 for four people, a 5-day Goa or Ooty trip between ₹45,000 and ₹80,000, and an 8-day Kashmir or Manali holiday between ₹1,00,000 and ₹1,60,000. Why does my starting city change the total cost?
Flights, train fares, bus tickets, fuel and tolls all scale with the road and air distance between your city and the destination. Mumbai to Goa is a short hop, while Delhi to Goa is a long-haul journey, so the same hotel and food plan can differ by tens of thousands of rupees. The calculator adjusts every travel line to the city you pick.
How are hotel rooms counted for a family?
Rooms are counted per room, never per person. We assume two adults share one room, so four adults need two rooms, and the stay cost is rooms multiplied by nights multiplied by the nightly rate. This single rule is the most common reason online estimates come out wrong.
Which is cheaper for a family — train or flight?
For four travellers, a 3AC train usually beats flights on any route under roughly 1,500 km, often saving ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 return. Beyond that, the extra travel days start eating hotel nights and leave, and flights become better value. The savings panel shows the exact rupee difference for your route.
What is the emergency reserve and should I keep it?
It is a cushion of 5% or 10% added on top of your estimate to absorb fare changes, extra taxi trips, shopping and price rises between planning and travelling. We recommend keeping 5% for familiar routes and 10% for hill stations, peak season and long trips.
